Human Performance Technology

The following project builds on the related training program, and addresses performance in a comprehensive performance improvement campaign. Delivering a strong and effective performance campaign required a detailed analysis of where gaps existed, a plan of how those gaps would be addressed, and detailed interventions to provide concrete solutions to increase performance.

Performance needs assessment

Similar to the ADDIE model, the performance improvement campaign began with a thorough analysis of understanding where and why performance gaps were, and ultimately why low income seniors in the municipality of Glenoak were not able to achieve the main objective of eating healthy on a lower budget.

As an important foundation of the campaign, the performance needs assessment was essential in building an understanding of what would be needed going forward to develop the high level design and the detailed design. A critical part of the performance needs assessment included developing a behaviour engineering model and a cause analysis process map, to provide guidance in determining where performance gaps existed.

While it was complex at times to develop the assessment, providing detailed analyses on both the environment performers were under, and research on the particular demographic of low income seniors, helped to develop subsequent parts of the performance improvement campaign.

High Level design

The high level design was developed to give an overview of the performance improvement campaign, and provided a framework for how the campaign would unfold through several interventions.

The road map provided a general idea of which group of performers each intervention was geared toward as well as what objectives it targeted, and ultimately helped performers achieve job one: eating healthy and staying within a defined food budget. A brief overview is provided on each intervention in the campaign, and provides details on the type of genre, communication medium, its conventions, as well as which objectives it covers.

The high level design provided me with an opportunity to develop the process of combining the analysis details of the performance needs assessment and the group of interventions, which would help the low income seniors living in the city of Glenoak ultimately improve their performance.

The software, Piktochart, was used to create a road map infographic and provides a great visual for how the interventions flow in the performance improvement campaign. The visual representation of the road map for the interventions presented an opportunity for me to translate my ideas and design of the campaign in an impactful way, and present further details of each intervention.

Detailed design

The detailed design provided further information on two non-instructional interventions in the performance improvement campaign designed for the municipality of Glenoak.

The first intervention was an enewsletter which performers received monthly. To provide further accessibility a hardcopy was made available as well. The intervention addressed an environmental resource which supported performers in achieving the campaign objectives. The enewsletter contained pertinent information, including healthy recipes, new food products available in the store, and information on in-store events.

It was also produced using the report feature of the online software Piktochart. The design of the intervention provided me with a great opportunity to incorporate specific requirements from the sponsor, the municipality of Glenoak, and truly learn and apply usability design guidelines for the specific demographic.

The second intervention was a mobile wizard application for performers to use while grocery shopping, to be able to easily determine if the total of the food items in their cart was within their defined weekly food budget, or if they had gone over their budget. The mobile prototypes were developed with the online software Marvel, and introduced me to developing my skills on interface design of a mobile application. Usability for the specific demographic, low income seniors, was a major consideration in the interface design as well as branding requirements of the sponsor.

A formative evaluation was also included, addressing the technical and editorial reviews as well as pilot testing. The instruments in the evaluation aimed to assess how efficiently the performance improvement campaign addressed the performance issues and ensuring it was factual, clear, and designed with the performer in mind.

The overall process of the detailed designs allowed me the opportunity to truly apply specific demographic usability research into the design process, and ensure that the sponsor’s request was respected and met. While it required learning new software, incorporating usability concepts, and how to translate desired performance into effective interventions, it was a rewarding project that allowed me to build on a multitude of skills and concepts.
